I’m on some sort of hand-drawing fixation lately.  Spending an evening drawing hands from the current issue of TIME Magazine has become a sort of weekly ritual for me now.

How do you choose which hands to draw? This seems like a good art assignment.

You’re drawing those directly in ink, with no pencils, right? That’s a good addition to the assignment.

I think one of the things beginning cartoonists have the most trouble with is the anatomy of the hand. It’s a little weirder than any of us naturally think, and most people never think about the underlying anatomy until they start trying to draw real gestures.

Then they discover that they need alternatives other than “fist,” “karate chop / wave,” and “in a pocket.”
