I wrote a while back about my current SLG-published series, Midnight Sun, switching mid-stream from serialized comic book format into a single volume graphic novel, but in the last few weeks I’ve gotten some emails from folks wondering when issue four is coming out. So, I thought I’d post a quick update on the status of the project:
As mentioned, no more “floppy” issues of the book will appear. But, the complete story will be published as a graphic novel December of this year. The book will contain all the material from the first three issues, plus the conclusion of the story–what would have been issues four and five. Format-wise, it’s looking like it’s going to wind up about “digest” size, along the lines of NIL: A Land Beyond Belief or the Owly and Scott Pilgrim books. Production stuff like paper and cover stock will likely be very similar to SLG’s recent Rex Libris collection, but printed hopefully on some off-white or cream colored paper rather than the standard bright white stock.
I couldn’t be happier about both of the developments above. I had always imagined the book being published smaller than standard comic book size, and if you’ve seen the series you may have noted the resulting slightly larger-than-standard lettering. Hopefully, they’ll be able to get the vertical trim size a bit shorter than NIL, to eliminate the odd extra white space above and below the page art that was left in the “floppy” versions to keep the book standard comic book format (so retailers wouldn’t have trouble displaying the book in those standard comic book racks). Production value-wise, if the Midnight Sun GN looks anything like the recent Rex Libris book, you’ll hear no complaints from me–that thing looks great.
Anyway, I’m still pretty much in full-on panic mode trying to wrap up the last 20-odd pages of the story; revise, correct and reformat the first three chapters; and work simultaneously on the book design… but in the meantime, here are a few odd (and non-sequential) pages from the fourth chapter of the book:
