Here’s the Shuffleupagus jam I participated in at SPX this year. The other participants were Adam Rosenblatt, Isaac Cates and Michael Wenthe. What’s amazing about this particular jam technique, and this example in particular, is how coherent a story one often winds up with. In this case it was really helped along by the fact that all participants were good cartoonists to start with, and experienced at group jams. They all paid a lot of attention to things that really hold this together as a single story–from things like keeping the characters on model to more subtle stuff, like making sure that the spots on all the mushroom were all rendered with consistent hatching technique by everyone. The only real gaffs were my fault, namely the caterpillar’s odd change to formal diction in panel 5, and my off-model pipes in that panel as well as panel 6.
