I teach cartooning classes during the summers and one of the first things I try to get the students to do is to come up with a lot of characters very quickly. In the past, I’ve started with simple geometric doodles that I’ve handed out to each student, who then makes a character out of it in a minute or so. That student then passes his/her design on to the student to the right, who then changes the design then passes it on, etc.
But tomorrow I’m going to try a new technique to generate similar results, hopefully: nonsense names.
I’m going to have the students draw characters based on nonsense words. I’ll do this “drill sergeant” style, pacing around the room barking out foolish names and yelling “STOP!!!” every 60 seconds or so. Anyway, I’ve never done this before, but the online software linked above is a great resource for inspiration. Here are the nonsense names I’ve got so far:
