Farewell, “Daddy” Doo-Wop

Despite Winston-Salem’s self-ascribed status as “The City of the Arts,” its hipness factor is generally somewhat lacking; there are, however, a few jems to be found in the area. Unfortunately one of those few venerable institutions is ending as of tonight: The “Daddy” Doo-Wop show on WSNC, the Winston-Salem State University radio station. For something like six years you could tune in to WSNC on Sunday nights between 7:00 and 10:00 pm to hear a solid three hours of great 50s R&B and Doo-Wop—not that “When a Man Loves a Woman” kinda stuff you can hear on any olides radio station, but stuff like Willie “Piano Red” Perryman, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Sam Cooke, Johnnie Ray and Winston-Salem’s own The “5” Royales.

Why “Daddy” is hanging it up, I don’t know—but I guess I’m just gonna have to spend Sunday night radio-free since the only other station I listen to plays that jackass Garrison Keelor on Sunday Nights…

It ain’t the “Daddy” but check out http://www.beachshag.com. Fessa’ John Hook has a 24 hour online station which is strictly rhythm, beach and blues. The music you referenced is what Shag Dancing got started with about 50 years ago. Hook has different programs with different flavors like “The Fish Fry” and “Roadhouse Blues”. Best part is you don’t have to wait until Sunday night.

Also, check out Brian Brewer’s Saturday morning show on 90.9FM which is the Guilford College station. 10-12. Brian knows the difference between The Five Royales, The Fiestas, The Kingpins, etc.

    Enjoy,

Hey, thanks for the suggestions. I’m actually not a fan of beach music and tend to favor just early R&B/soul, so these days I’m getting my “fix” from the excellent “Hot Slop” podcast:

It’s great stuff and all from vinyl record.
