At Heroes Con 2013: The Mega Music Panel

Come one, come all! This Saturday at Heroes Con 2013, Craig Fischer and I will be putting on one of our annual “mega-panels.” In this case, it’s a mega music panel, featuring a live band; panel discussion with Peter Bagge, Ed Piskor, and the guys behind the upcoming graphic novel, The Fifth Beatle; and music/comics presentations from both Craig and me. It’s Saturday at 3:00 PM in Room 209/210. Here’s the full skinny:

MEGA MUSIC PANEL: “And Brainiac on Xylophone”: On the Intersection(s) of Comics and Music 
Comics and music share a lot of affinities—both depend heavily on rhythm and intervals, and many cartoonists are also musicians—and cartoonist Ben Towle and blogger Craig Fischer have organized a diverse smorgasbord of a panel to explore these affinities. Ben will discuss the many ways cartoonists represent music visually, and will chair a wide-ranging panel on comics and music with Peter Bagge (Hate, Yeah!), Ed Piskor (Hip-Hop Family Tree), Andrew Robinson and Vivek J. Tiwary (The Fifth Beatle). Craig will talk about the work of Marc Weidenbaum, an editor, teacher and musician who’s been combining comics and music in his creative projects for over two decades. And Charlotte avant-duo Ghost Trees (Brent Bagwell on saxophone, Seth Nanaa on drums) will participate in two live comics/music performances, including a soundtrack for Joe Lambert’s “Turtle, Keep It Steady,” a rock-n-roll retelling of the Tortoise-Hare fable!

Indie Pop-Up Fair – Saturday, April 27th

I’ll be setting up shop at the Indie Pop-Up Fair this coming Saturday, April 27th at Mary’s of Course in downtown Winston-Salem. I’ll be selling original art from the various “alpha-projects,” a few minicomics, Animal Alphabet post cards, etc. This is the first year for this event, so I don’t know what to expect, but there are several other local, independent vendors showing up and it’s on the beautiful outdoor patio area of Mary’s, so I can’t imagine that it wouldn’t be a blast. Come on by and see me–and get something to eat at Mary’s while you’re there!

Come See Me At The Durham Comics Fest!

This Saturday, April 20th, I’ll be appearing at the Comics Fest in Durham, N.C. at the Southwest Regional Library. I’ll be participating in a roundtable discussion about comics-making as well as assisting Scott Hampton in a comics workshop earlier in the day. Other great guests include Raina Telgemeier, Ursula Vernon and Jan Burger. The workshop is from 1-3 pm and the panel discussion is 4. Oyster War Nominated for 2013 Eisner Award

Shock and awe! I’m incredibly honored–and more than a little bit surprised, given the incredible volume of amazing comics currently being published directly to the web–to have Oyster War be nominated for a 2013 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award in the category of Best Digital Comic.
