Center for Cartoon Studies

I’m currently in White River Junction, Vermont visiting the Center for Cartoon Studies. I arrived yesterday and delivered a short talk to the 21 students who make up the inagural incoming class, then have been kicking around the town since then. Below are a few pictures:

Here’s the main drag of downtown White River Junction:

…and the Hotel Coolidge where I’m currently staying. It’s seems to be riding the fine line between “rustic” and “delapitated”:

Ignatz Nominees FINALLY Announced

Like the headline says, the Ignatz awards–the annual comics industry awards presented every year at SPX–have been announced, just a week or so before the event itself. Here’s a list:

2005 Ignatz Awards

I’m glad to see that Roger Langridge and Josh Cotter are finally getting some recognition. If you don’t own the Fred the Clown collection (by Langridge) or Skyscrapers of the Midwest #2 yet, you should go out and buy them immediately.

I’m surprised by how few folks chose to debut books this year. As I’m debuting a solo mini-comic and am also included in a mini-comics anthology, I’ve got two nominations in the “Outstanding Debut” category. I’m guessing “True Porn” vol II will win…’cause it’s got humping and stuff in it.

OUTSTANDING DEBUT NOMINEES
* 676 apparitions of Killoffer, Killoffer, Typocrat Press
* Action Philosphers: Self Help For Stupid Ugly Losers #1, Ryan Dunlavy & Fred Van Lente
* American Music: A-Z, Ben Towle

* Conversations #2, James Kochalka & Jeffrey Brown, Top Shelf Productions
* The Dada Alphabet, An Absurdist’s Primer, Freese, Milloway & Wood

* House of Twelve’s Rashoman, Cheese Hasselberger, House of Twelve

* Merde, Steve Ahlquist, Chris Reilly & Ben Towle

SPX 2005

SPX 2005 is creeping up. Here’s a cool banner I received from J. Chris Campbell of Wide Awake Press:

____ are Fun to Draw

Here’s my contribution to a mini-comic debuting at the upcoming SPX in Bethesda, MD. The idea behind this publication is that all contributors provided the editor with a list of what he or she considers to be 40 fun to draw things. The editor then compiled a list of the most popular items. Each contributor then had to draw all 30 of the most popular items, plus an additional 10 chosen from among the lesser voted-on items. I’m not going to list which ones are on this drawing…but I will say that they’re arranged alphabetically:
