Congrats to local screenwriter (and guy who lives lives across the street from me) Angus MacLachlan for his Independent Spirit Award nomination for Junebug! He’s about a third of the way down, under “Best First Screenplay.” (Although, I have to point out that he wrote the screenplay for cult favorite short film Tater Tomater, so I’m not sure how exaclty this is his first screenplay.)

Contested Streets
A link to this interesting documentary footage was sent to me by the owner of Winston-Salem’s Neighborhood Transportation bike shop. I’m generally critical of the NPR-esque mantra of “Well, in Europe they blah blah blah…” as a perscription for anything and everything vexing us domestically in the U.S., but in this case they definitely seem to be ages ahead of us. As someone who regularly risks being run down by tractor trailers, speeders and the like just to get around my neighborhood on foot or on bike, I definitely would pay some of them sky-high socialist European-style taxes for some decent bike lanes in Winston-Salem.
