Project Crackhouse: The Big Dig

The next major phase of renovation of The Crackhouse begins next week and consequently we’ve spent the bulk of this weekend moving all of our belongings from the downstairs of the house into one of those “Pack Rat” storage things that will be hauled away tomorrow. For the record, here is the initial state of the affected areas.

Here’s the living room as it appears. Note torn out ceiling. It’s been like that for a while–ever since some serious structural work had to be done for the bathroom dirctly above. To the left side of this picture will soon appear a new hallway which will route all the way to the new master bedroom at the back of the house. Also added will be a half-bath…and a ceiling. Note also goofy dog, Sheila (on right), sleeping on rather than in her crate/tent/hut thing.

This is the dining room. This is pretty much going to stay the same configuration-wise, just new ceiling, paint, electrical, etc. Only the necessities remain behind: a table, booze, and stereo.

This is a weird “mystery room” beneath the stairwell that used to be my studio. It will become a master bathroom, and the current bathroom beyond will become a walk-in closet…and the room beyond that that you can see a little bit of will be the master bedroom.

Finally, this room used to be Sheila’s room, but will become our master bedroom. It has tons of windows looking out into the back yard, and is thankfully all the way in the back of the house, as far as possible away from the street, which is unfortunately a route used by school busses, ambulances, and people with those really really loud and annoying bass car stereos.

More to come as things progress…

St. Pat’s

It hardly seems like St. Patrick’s Day at all here in Winston-Salem…especially compared to my former city of residence, Savannah, Georgia, site of the second-largest St. Pat’s parade in America.

Here’s an invite I did for a party in Savannah a couple of years ago. It features “Shamrock Squid,” a (supposedly) public domain alt-comics character. The balcony on the house in the last panel is attached to the apartment we lived in.

Barring Savannah, if I could be anywhere else for St. Pat’s, I’d have to be in Times Square, for the sold out Pogues show tonight.
