Ma-Con: Comic Con, Feb 23

Coming up next week, I’ll be appearing at Ma-Con, a one-day comics event held at Macon, Georgia’s Museum of Arts and Sciences in conjunction with their running exhibit, “The Art of Macon Comics.”  That exhibit showcases the art of Macon comics artists Craig Hamilton, Ray Snyder and Tony Harris, some of whom local N.C. folks may have seen over the years at Heroes Con.  In addition to those three, the event on Saturday the 23rd will also include a ton of other folk listed on the banner below, as well as pals Josh Latta and Brad McGinty, both of whose work you can check out at www.cutegirldemographics.com.

I’m a terrible caricaturist, (and terrible at likenesses in general, actually) but that doesn’t stop me from trying, especially if I’m stuck with a baby in my lap and the only thing in arm’s reach is a TIME Magazine.

Harvey Awards Ballots Now Open

2008 Harvey Award nomination ballots are available online now and, although I’d of course never directly request such a thing <cough!><cough!>, if for some reason you felt compelled to vote for Midnight Sun in any or all of the following categories, I’d certainly not object:

BEST CARTOONIST
BEST GRAPHIC ALBUM – ORIGINAL*

(*I’m not exactly sure what their critera for original vs. reprint is in “Best Graphic Album” but it seems more appropriate to put Midnight Sun there than, say, competing with the latest collection of Peanuts strips, for example.)

You do, though, have to be “involved in a creative capacity in the comics field” to submit a ballot… although, I’m not 100% sure of what that includes.  Obviously, published cartoonists, but I’m not sure if you can vote if you’re, say, a writer for The Comics Journal, or run a podcast, or whatever.

I generally don’t vote for myself in these things, particularly in the Harveys, which seem like they’re pretty susceptible to deliberate efforts to “game” the results, as well as just statistical oddities due to small sample size, so my nominations are going to be largely from this bunch of books, which off the top of my head were some of my favorites from 2007:

Skyscrapers of the Midwest #4 – Josh Cotter (Adhouse)

Superspy – Matt Kindt (Top Shelf)

Black Metal – Rick Spears and Chuck B.B. (Oni)

Alias the Cat – Kim Deitch (Pantheon)

The Best of Mutts – Patrick McDonald (Andrews McMeel)

Ladies and gentlemen, a fat Pteranadon and an ankylosaurus that looks like  a dog:

I’ve signed on to do a 3-page story for the upcoming dinosaur/caveman-themed Wide Awake Press Free Comic Book Day comic and frankly I’m stumped for what to do… So, I’ve just been noodling around and drawing dinosaurs.  Deadline is the end of March, so I gotta come up with something soon…
