Sketchbook 2/13

I haven’t posted a whole lot from my sketchbook lately, mainly because most of my evening sketch time has been taken up by either working on my weekly AlphaBeast or my weekly Portrait Night drawing. With the latter of those two now concluded, though, I’m hoping I’ll have a bit more time to do some non-directed drawing in the evenings.

To kick things off I decided to do one of these “blind doodle grid” exercises that I do every once in a while. As per usual, I completely forgot to take a picture of the initial squiggles, but basically I divide the page into nine panels then, using a non-photo blue pencil, do a blind doodle (not looking at the page) in each panel. Then using first pencil and then later a Pentel brush pen, I try to create a creature or character out of each squiggle. Some are more successful than others, but I feel that it’s a good creative problem-solving exercise regardless of the final image. Here’s the one I just wrapped up last night:

P is for Peryton

So after ragging on the mongrelman a while back, I’ve wound up drawing one of those silly “mash-up” beasts after all: the peryton. According to the Monster Manual, the peryton is, “the result of the same type of experimentation as brought about the owlbear.” Experimentation, eh? One hopes the deer was on the receiving end here.
