Other than a nebulous “small press summit” that’s supposedly occuring as I type this (and the particulars of which no one seems to know), This year’s SPX is pretty much done. My impressions? Business-wise, I pretty much made the table fee back plus some change…and when you account cost of the books themselves as well as hotel room, food, etc., that’s not great. On the other hand, I don’t really look at SPX as a business endevor. Crowd-wise, steady seems to be the best description. It was never jammed-packed busy, and it was never really dead either.
The Ignatz awards were thankfully breif and somewhat predictable, with folks like Roger Langridge and Josh Cotter getting passed over in favor of indy faves like Andy Runton and Marjane Satrapi. Nicholas Gurewitch’s Perry Bible Fellowship won best online comic, which is good…or I think it’s good; I don’t really read any other online comics, so I guess I don’t know. Other highlights included Alec Longstreth’s heartfelt acceptance speech (for Outstanding Minicomic) and Guest of Honor Harvey Pekar’s continual and unrelenting scowling.
