Ditko Panel at Heroes Con 2009

Once again, Craig Fischer and I will be organizing and hosting one of our (in)famous “mega-panels” at this year’s Heroes Con.  This year’s subject: Steve Ditko!  Trust me, you’re going to want to be there for this one.  It’s at 3:00 pm on Saturday in room 213 BCD.

Starting the festivities will be the first ever official U.S. showing of Jonathan Ross’s BBC Documentary, In Search of Steve Ditko.  Then comics heavyweights Roy Thomas and Dick Giordano will be speaking about their experiences working with the enigmatic and sometimes prickly Ditko.  Finally, Craig, Chris Schweizer (of Crogan’s Vengeance fame) and I will each be discussing one of our favorite pages of Ditko’s work.

Anyway, here’s the official skinny:

A IS A+: A STEVE DITKO CELEBRATION!

Midnight Sun cartoonist Ben Towle and Thought Balloonist blogger Craig Fischer host an extensive tribute to one of the most creative and enigmatic figures in comics: Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko! The first hour will be a screening of Jonathan Ross’s provocative BBC documentary In Search of Steve Ditko (2007), featuring interviews with John Romita, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and other high-profile Ditko fans. Following the documentary, two comics legends who worked extensively with Ditko–writer/editor Roy Thomas and artist/editor Dick Giordano–will share their memories of the man and his art. The tribute ends with Ben, Craig, and cartoonist/educator Chris Schweizer analyzing their favorite Ditko pages and dissecting Ditko’s contributions to comics history.

Be there!

Come on Thunderchild: People Let Me Tell You

Here’s some footage of the band I was in back in those halcyon days of the mid-’90s, Come On Thunderchild.  In addition to the core group of four members, this performance features Chris Krull on percussion and Eric Kraus on guitar.  Chris played and toured with us on and off for several years; Eric, though, only played with us a few times.  This performance appears to be at Charlotte’s Tremont Music Hall and was, no doubt, pivotal to my capturing Creative Loafing‘s much-coveted Sparkliest Pants in Charlotte award.
