{"id":827,"date":"2007-10-13T21:52:23","date_gmt":"2007-10-14T01:52:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=827"},"modified":"2007-10-14T01:34:39","modified_gmt":"2007-10-14T05:34:39","slug":"spx-2007-day-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=827","title":{"rendered":"SPX 2007 &#8211; Day 2"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, traditionally the more heavily attended of the two days of SPX, lived up to that reputation and more today with pretty much everyone I talked to reporting really strong sales and a few folks going as far as to say that this has been the strongest SPX so far.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019d agree with that as well.<span>  <\/span>Given that I had essentially nothing new (other than some freebie promotional stuff for the upcoming <em>Midnight Sun<\/em> graphic novel), I had amazingly good sales for the day.<span>  <\/span>I had on hand way more copies of my old 2002 SLG book <em>Farewell, Georgia<\/em>, than I would normally have brought to an SPX\u2014around 30 copies\u2014and sold every one of them by about 5:30 today.<span>  <\/span>My minicomcs sales weren\u2019t as strong as past years, but as mentioned I didn\u2019t have much new, and the competition for good minis at SPX is getting pretty stiff these days.<span>  <\/span>With my table space clearer than usual, I even threw some original pages up and managed to sell one of those as well.<span>  <\/span>A great day, all in all.<span>  <\/span>So, despite my previous grousing about the new location, it\u2019s looking like SPX is firmly established and prospering.\u00a0 <o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Having actually made a bit of change this go round, I was able to hit the floor and shop for stuff without financial guilt.<span>  <\/span>Here\u2019s a few of the items I picked up:<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Shithole<\/em> by Corine Mucha \u2013 Corine gave me a mini at my table last year called maybe <em>Bugs<\/em> (?) and I really enjoyed it, so when I saw her on the Ignatz ballot for Outstanding Debut, I made a point to track her latest down.<o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Tub Flub<\/em> by Brad McGinty \u2013 I\u2019m always shamed by the fact that Brad and I are at the same events pretty much every year and&#8211;while I often show up empty handed&#8211;he always has something new.<span>  <\/span>Always.<o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Monsters<\/em> by Ken Dahl \u2013 This was a bit of a buzz book from last year\u2019s show, and issue two was out for this year&#8217;s show and looked fantastic, but I figured I\u2019d start with issue one.<span>  <\/span>All the CCS stuff looked really good as usual and I would have bought more stuff except that I just ordered a bunch of minis from them online a couple of weeks ago.<o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Monkey and the Crab<\/em> by Shawn Cheng and Sara Edward-Corbett \u2013 This book was nominated for best mini I think, and it looks really nice.<span>  <\/span>It was a bit pricey at $8.00, but it\u2019s hand bound with purple string in some kinda crazy-ass cat&#8217;s cradle stitching, so I coughed up the bread on \u201cart object\u201d grounds.<o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Carl is the Awesome: Carl\u2019s Large Story!!!<\/em><span>  <\/span>by Marcos Perez<span>  <\/span>&#8211; It\u2019s true, you know: Carl <em>IS<\/em> the awesome.<span>  <\/span>There was also a hardbound collection of the first bunch of Carl minis available that I would have bought if I didn\u2019t already have them all in their original form.<o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Zig Zag<\/em> #2 by J. Chris Campbell \u2013 Chris\u2019s stuff is always amazing and I\u2019m sure this is no exception.<span>  <\/span>The \u201csmiley\/frowny\u201d face endpapers are worth the cover price alone.<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Portraits, Vol I: Authors of Adventure Literature<\/em> by Chris Schweizer \u2013 I\u2019m a sucker for these sort of \u201cillustrated list\u201d minis (and make them myself occasionally) and this one looks beautiful.<span>  <\/span>Chris has a pirate book coming out soon from Oni that looks fantastic as well.<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><em>Skyscrapers of the <st1 w:st=\"on\">Midwest<\/st1><\/em> #4 by Josh Cotter \u2013 I think Josh Cotter is one of the most impressive cartoonists to appear on the scene in recent times and I\u2019m sure this latest installment of Skyscrapers is going to be good.<span>  <\/span>I\u2019ve just flipped through it at this point, but noticed that it\u2019s got a cool comic-in-a-comic thing going on featuring \u201cNova Stealth,\u201d that giant Cylon lookin\u2019 robot from some of the earlier stories.<o><\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">The Ignatz awards are getting underway downstairs as I type this, so I\u2019ll probably wander down to that crazy \u201cUnited Nations\u201d room where they\u2019re held to root for my faves.<span>  <\/span>This year I voted a Ted Stearn straight ticket.<span>  <\/span>Go, Ted!<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><o> <\/o><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span> <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Saturday, traditionally the more heavily attended of the two days of SPX, lived up to that reputation and more today with pretty much everyone I talked to reporting really strong sales and a few folks going as far as to say that this has been the strongest SPX so far.
