{"id":804,"date":"2007-09-05T16:52:28","date_gmt":"2007-09-05T20:52:28","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=804"},"modified":"2007-09-05T21:32:23","modified_gmt":"2007-09-06T01:32:23","slug":"the-spitsbergen-airship-museum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=804","title":{"rendered":"The Spitsbergen Airship Museum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had been scouring the web, looking for some illustrations of the airship <em>Italia<\/em> I wanted to potentially reference for my work on the final chapter of my forthcoming graphic novel, <em>Midnight Sun<\/em>, when I stumbled on the website for the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.spitsbergenairshipmuseum.com\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Spitsbergen Airship Museum<\/a>.  It looks like, at this point, the museum is in-progress and expected to open in 2008.   In the meantime, though, they appear to have acquired some pretty amazing airship-related items, including a ton of <em>Italia<\/em> stuff.  Here are a few of the illustrations I had been seeking out; apparently the museum has copies of the original newspapers in its collection:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spitsbergenairshipmuseum.com\/items\/Items\/images\/prevs\/no%20171%20newspaper%201928.jpg\" height=\"500\" width=\"368\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spitsbergenairshipmuseum.com\/items\/Items\/images\/prevs\/no%20281%20newspaper%201964.jpg\" height=\"500\" width=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.spitsbergenairshipmuseum.com\/items\/Items\/images\/prevs\/no%20282%20newspaper%201961.jpg\" height=\"500\" width=\"375\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s interesting to note that, although there were only a small handful of books written in English about the <em>Italia<\/em> disaster, that apparently&#8211;judging by the museum&#8217;s collection&#8211;pretty much everyone involved in the crash itself and\/or the subsequent rescue attempts seems to have written a book in his native tongue.
