Thumbnails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just for fun, I thought I&#8217;d drum up maybe five pages or so of my imagined graphic novel adaptation of <em>The Count of Monte Cristo<\/em>.\u00a0 This obviously isn&#8217;t a &#8220;front burner&#8221; project for me at the moment, but I&#8217;ll post progress on these pages as I work on them with an eye toward discussing process.\u00a0 So, here are five pages of thumbnails:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"01\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/01.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1883 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/01.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"01\" width=\"219\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"021\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/021.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1888 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/021.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"021\" width=\"249\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"03\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/03.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1885 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/03.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"03\" width=\"252\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"04\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/04.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1886 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/04.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"04\" width=\"279\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"05\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/05.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1887 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/11\/05.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"05\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is of course (if you&#8217;re familiar with the story) the scene in which Edmund has switched places with the corpse of his recently-departed jailmate.\u00a0 He assumes he&#8217;ll be taken out and buried in a shallow grave and then, once the guards have left, he&#8217;ll be able to cut him out of his sack and dig himself out the grave with his 19th century &#8220;shiv.&#8221;\u00a0 This is of course not the case, though&#8230;\u00a0 As it says, &#8220;The <em>sea<\/em> is the cemetery of the Chateau d&#8217;If.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As you can see, I work in multiple colors&#8211;a trick I picked up when I very, very briefly worked in animation.\u00a0 I start in light blue, then move to orange, red and finally a regular B pencil.\u00a0 This allows me to go over and over an image, building it up and correcting as I go.\u00a0 I can go in with Photoshop\u00a0 and pull all the non-pencil color out as I move to the next phase.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m using a standard 9-panel grid as a base.\u00a0 I tend to favor this, as well as a slightly more square than usual page shape, for most of my work.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m just guessing at the sizes needed for caption boxes and voice balloons at this point.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just for fun, I thought I&#8217;d drum up maybe five pages or so of my imagined graphic novel adaptation of The Count of Monte Cristo.\u00a0 This obviously isn&#8217;t a &#8220;front burner&#8221;
