{"id":1818,"date":"2009-10-08T21:49:34","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T01:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1818"},"modified":"2009-10-08T21:49:34","modified_gmt":"2009-10-09T01:49:34","slug":"no-this-is-the-way-to-improve-spx","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1818","title":{"rendered":"No, THIS Is The Way To Improve SPX"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Every year after SPX,\u00a0 alt-comix&#8217;s venerable gathering in Bethesda, there are usually a few folks who blog about ways to improve the show.\u00a0 This year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/thedailycrosshatch.com\/2009\/10\/07\/an-open-letter-to-spx-by-susie-cagle\/\" target=\"_blank\">most circulated post<\/a> is from Susie Cagle.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve even <a href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=380\" target=\"_self\">dabbled in the SPX critique\/suggestion game<\/a> myself.\u00a0 Usually folks who discuss possible changes to SPX do so drawing on and citing various other comics events, whether from the domestic mainstream like the San Diego Comic-Con or from the European scene like the Angoul\u00eame festival.\u00a0 I think, though, it&#8217;s time to look at events outside the insular world of comics to find ways to improve comics events.\u00a0 Fortunately I happened to be at just such an event this evening, Winston-Salem&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dcfair.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dixie Classic Fair<\/a>, which since 1882 has been drawing folks from around the state for an evening of fun, games, rides, and yes, one attraction in particular that I feel would really improve most comics events a thousand-fold: <strong>FRIED STUFF<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"df_butter\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/10\/df_butter.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1819 centered aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2009\/10\/df_butter.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"df_butter\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>SPX has its &#8220;buzz books,&#8221; but each year of the Dixie Classic seems to have  a new fried &#8220;buzz item.&#8221;\u00a0 This year it was&#8230;. wait for it&#8230;. fried butter!\u00a0 While I&#8217;m not sure that it really made my &#8220;heart flutter&#8221; as advertised, it was pretty damn good.\u00a0 Basically, it was a small column of butter wrapped in multiple layers of filo dough, deep fried, and then sprinkled with powered sugar.\u00a0 Also available were fried Oreos, fried Snickers bars, fried Three Musketeers bars, Fried pickles, fried cheese, etc. (The fried Snickers is the best one I&#8217;ve tried so far.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a Snickers bar on a stick, dipped in funnel cake batter, deep fried, and then topped with powdered sugar.)<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m glad that SPX&#8217;s attendance was up 19% to around 1800.\u00a0 Attendance of the the Dixie Classic is regularly in the hundreds of thousands.\u00a0 Hear me now and believe me later, SPX&#8230;
