Despite Winston-Salem’s self-ascribed status as “The City of the Arts,” its hipness factor is generally somewhat lacking; there are, however, a few jems to be found in the area. Unfortunately one of those few venerable institutions is ending as of tonight: The “Daddy” Doo-Wop show on WSNC, the Winston-Salem State University radio station. For something like six years you could tune in to WSNC on Sunday nights between 7:00 and 10:00 pm to hear a solid three hours of great 50s R&B and Doo-Wop—not that “When a Man Loves a Woman” kinda stuff you can hear on any olides radio station, but stuff like Willie “Piano Red” Perryman, Screamin’ Jay Hawkins, Sam Cooke, Johnnie Ray and Winston-Salem’s own The “5” Royales.<\/p>\n
