{"id":1209,"date":"2008-11-30T15:00:31","date_gmt":"2008-11-30T19:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1209"},"modified":"2008-11-30T15:01:33","modified_gmt":"2008-11-30T19:01:33","slug":"finished-penciled-pages-for-a-gn-the-weigh-in","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1209","title":{"rendered":"Finished Penciled Pages for a GN: The Weigh-In"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing most folks who <em>aren&#8217;t <\/em>cartoonists probably don&#8217;t consider much is the sheer mass of\u00a0 the many, many pages of finished artwork cartoonists wind up with.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve got tons of pages lying around my studio, and <em>I<\/em> only manage to produce a book every few years.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine what artists who, say, pencil a monthly book for DC do with all this stuff.\u00a0 Out of curiosity, I thought I&#8217;d get some &#8220;stats&#8221; on the now-fully penciled pages (yay!) for <strong>Amelia: This Broad Ocean<\/strong>, my current project (with Jason Lutes and Sarah Stewart Taylor, of course&#8211;doing layouts and writing, respectively).\u00a0 So here&#8217;s the completed heap:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"amelia_stack1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/11\/amelia_stack1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1210 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/11\/amelia_stack1.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"amelia_stack1\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The pages on the bottom there that are sticking out are two-page spreads that I&#8217;ve done on single <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dickblick.com\/zz133\/09\/\" target=\"_blank\">sheets of 23&#8243; x 29&#8243; sheets of bristol<\/a>.\u00a0 (The other single-page art is on the same sheets of bristol, but cut in half.)\u00a0 Out of curiosity, I decided to weigh the whole lot.\u00a0 Although the stack was far more than my little postal scale could handle, I loaded them on there in smaller stacks and it looks like they weigh in at just under ten pounds.\u00a0 Similarly, it looks like the stack&#8217;s measuring in at just under an inch and a half:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"amelia_stack2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/11\/amelia_stack2.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1211 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/11\/amelia_stack2.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"amelia_stack2\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m not actually even sure how many pages there are at this point, since the numbering is somewhat off, owing to a number of scenes being inserted later between previously existing pages.\u00a0 Like the other Hyperion GNs, I think this one will be 80 pages total, but that includes various non-art elements like title pages and study material in the back.\u00a0 My guess is maybe 70 pages or artwork total.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I&#8217;m also not really sure why I&#8217;ve bothered to weigh and measure these pages&#8230;
