{"id":1122,"date":"2008-09-14T15:02:58","date_gmt":"2008-09-14T19:02:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1122"},"modified":"2008-09-14T15:03:53","modified_gmt":"2008-09-14T19:03:53","slug":"drawing-words-writing-pictures-wk-3-homework","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/?p=1122","title":{"rendered":"Drawing Words &#038; Writing Pictures &#8211; WK 3 Homework"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.dw-wp.com\/students\/assignment03.html\" target=\"_blank\">Homework for week three<\/a> was basically just a 3-5 panel newspaper-style strip.\u00a0 I wound up making a list of a dozen or so possible &#8220;situations&#8221; to build a newspaper strip around, but ultimately got lazy and just went with something I know: musicians.<\/p>\n<p>I think the main thing I learned from doing this is just how important it is to the newspaper strip format for the readers to really know and be familiar with the characters and settings.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really difficult to come up with a single, isolated newspaper strip that really works well.\u00a0 I regularly read and enjoy strips like <em>Get Fuzzy<\/em>, <em>Mutts<\/em>, <em>Pearls before Swine<\/em>, and <em>Cul de Sac<\/em>, but doing this assignment made me realize how much of my enjoyment of those strips is based on my knowing the characters.\u00a0 The way this assignment is set up in <em>DW&amp;WP<\/em> stresses gags and funny situations, which makes a lot of sense for a one-off strip, but really most newspaper strips (or most <em>good<\/em> ones, anyway) work more because they&#8217;re character-driven.\u00a0 A prime example of this is <em>Get Fuzzy<\/em>, which rarely has a &#8220;gag&#8221; per-se; its humor is driven by the interactions of the characters, and it&#8217;s really at its funniest if you&#8217;ve known and followed those characters for a while.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s my strip&#8230; Not particularly inspired, but certainly complete to the thumbnail stage as per the assignment.\u00a0 If I had to develop this further, I&#8217;d concentrate on correcting and making consistent the head\/body ratio of the two characters, and I&#8217;d try to simplify and make clearer the elements in panels one and four (the van, trailer, venue, etc.).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"wk3_h1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/09\/wk3_h1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"attachment wp-att-1123 centered\" src=\"http:\/\/www.benzilla.com\/uploads\/2008\/09\/wk3_h1.thumbnail.jpg\" alt=\"wk3_h1\" width=\"300\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Homework for week three was basically just a 3-5 panel newspaper-style strip.\u00a0 I wound up making a list of a dozen or so possible &#8220;situations&#8221; to build a newspaper strip around, but ultimately got lazy and just went with something I know: musicians.
