Spain Rodriguez’s Trashman

Trashman

As you’ve probably heard, underground cartoonist Spain Rodriguez died last week. Here’s a illo I did of his iconic post-apocalyptic Marxist-anarchist superhero, Trashman: The original art for this is for sale here.

Iron Man MK1 Armor

Iron-Man

Here’s a quick pinup I did of the first version of Iron Man’s armor. There’s something really appealing about this clunky, gray “bullet head” version of Iron Man, I think. It has a visual sense of weight and menace that the later versions lack. As you can see I’m still experimenting with trying spotting blacks. …

Hellboy!

Hellboy

Here’s a quick ink & watercolor Hellboy I just wrapped up. I just started re-reading some of the early Hellboy comics. What great stuff–and so beautifully drawn and colored!

Heroes Con – Days 2 & 3

IMG_20120623_131002

Saturday Apparently, Stan Lee’s superpower is the ability to turn Heroes Con into a complete zoo. The convention center lobby was packed like I’d never seen it before on Saturday morning, and apparently the extra hubbub was all for “Stan The Man.” Getting Stan Lee as a Heroes Con guest was a pretty big score, …

“Heroes Caaaaaaahhhhhnnnnn!” Heroes Con ’12 is right around the corner, so here’s some basic info on what’s going on vis-à-vis yours truly: Where Will I Be? I’ll be seated in “Indie Island” at table AA-544. Here’s a quick map of the 500 section of Indie Island with my table marked, as well as the tables …

Three Recent Commissions

amelia

I recently got three really fun commissions–all from the same person. What a great combo: a drawing from Amelia Earhart: This Broad Ocean, another from my previous book Midnight Sun, and a double superhero commission of Iron Man and Captain America. I asked folks on Twitter what the heck those disk-things are supposed to be …

Heroes Con 2011 – Day 3

C360_2011-06-05 14-22-39_edit0

Sunday My Sunday at Heroes Con started out with an interesting–if sparsely attended–panel: “Historical Comics” with Becky Cloonan, Chris Schweizer, Don Rosa and me. It made me wonder if maybe having the first panel each day start an hour (or half hour) after opening might be a good idea, since that would allow time for …

Heroes Con 2011, Here I Come!

hc-logo_cmyk

If you’ve ever talked comics cons with me, you know that Heroes Con in Charlotte is one of my absolute favorites. Partially this is because I’ve been going there so long–maybe ten years or so, either as an attendee or an invited guest–and of course it’s right down the road from me in Charlotte. Another …

I’m TCAF-bound, Y’all!

Untitled-1

You’re Going Where?! That’s right, people: I’m breaking out of my crusty SPX/Heroes Con-only shell and exhibiting at a new (to me) convention this year! I’d heard nothing but fantastic stuff about the Toronto Comics Art Festival (AKA “TCAF”) and so I applied to exhibit this year… and was incredibly surprised and honored to have …
