According to the Monster Manual II, the Froghemoth is “huge and weird.” Indeed.

That must have been drawn by Erol Otus originally!

@Issac – Here’s the illo from Monster Manual II that I worked from:

I read that it appeared in a module first, though, so the original design may have been by a different artist. I need to start going through my modules as well looking for good beasts.
I think it must come from that module that’s like a sci-fi hybrid — the one where the alien ship has crash-landed in a D&D world. But I don’t remember much more than that … maybe I’ll google around in a few minutes.

@Isaac – Man, how could I have forgotten that?! It’s from Expedition To The Barrier Peaks. I’m holding my copy in my mitts right now.
… and it’s one of only a few drawings for that module done by Erol Otus, sure enough.
It sure is interesting the way his design sense (and Trampier’s, for that matter, to some extent, in that catoblepas from a few weeks ago) sort of transcends individual drawings and enters into the design of the creatures themselves.
I’m trying to think of other cartoonists for whom that holds. Certainly Kirby, Ditko, and Dave Cockrum, among superhero costume designers…
[…] never finished my Froghemoth, bu AlphaBeasts co-chair Ben Towle was man enough to finish his, so go check it out! Maybe I’ll finish mine […]
